Providing Health Care For Those In Need
Kaiser Permanente has good reason to invest in wellness programs in the Central Valley. Improving health care access for vulnerable populations is at the core of its mission. The Neighbors in Health program, now in its 12th year, is one of the most visible examples of how Kaiser Permanente reaches out to improve community health in the Central Valley.
“Our Neighbors in Health annual event is just one way we support total health of our communities,” said Moses Elam, M.D., Physician-in-Chief, for the Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Area. “We contribute resources, equipment and medical staff expertise to help serve the needs of the underserved in our communities.”
Neighbors in Health provides care and screenings to more than 4,000 people in Manteca, Modesto and Stockton at its annual event every August. Medical screenings available include blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, dental, diabetes and prostate. Immunizations, health education and pharmacy services are also available.
“We commit to doing our part to ease the burden of caring for uninsured and underinsured families in areas we serve,” said Corwin Harper, Senior Vice President and Area Manager. “We have strong partnerships with the public hospital and community clinics that play critical roles in caring for the uninsured and underinsured.”
In addition to Neighbors in Health, other Kaiser Permanente programs that address community health needs include its Migrant Camps Healthcare Outreach, Emergency Food Banks Wellness, and the Community Healthworks Mobile Clinic. In 2006, Kaiser Permanente provided more than $1 million in grants to more than 40 agencies to help serve the uninsured and underinsured members of the community.
