East Bay Child Psychiatry Groups
NOTE: The Groups offered in the department are ONLY available to established patients in the department. Access to most groups is by referral from the primary clinician in the East Bay department of psychiatry. Descriptor for each group is only to give a general understanding of the nature of the group. Patients who are interested in attending any group should discuss their interest with their primary clinician in the department. Referral to groups is based on medical necessity as well as goodness of fit with the particular group. This listing of groups is subject to change without prior notice.
OAKLAND
ADHD Screening Group
Initial evaluation of children with ADHD symptoms in a group setting, plus ADHD orientation for parents.
Information regarding ADHD and evaluation process.
ADHD Family Group
Ongoing family group with two (2) components. Teens and parents meet separately with occasional joint sessions. The teen group focuses on understanding symptoms and developing coping strategies. The parent session focuses on understanding ADHD in children and teens. Effective parenting strategies are discussed.
ADHD Medication Group
One-time group for parents and children initiating medication for the treatment of ADHD
ADHD Parent Education Class
(1) Understanding ADHD; (2) Navigating the School System; (3) Applying Behavioral Systems at Home
The Asperger’s Syndrome Social Skills Group
Weekly psycho-educational group that uses psycho-educational lectures, role play, and behavioral interventions to help children, within the ASD Spectrum, learn more useful and effective social interaction skills
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills Group for Teens
Lesson based group for 12 weeks
Drama Group for Kids
A psychotherapy Drama Group for kids
Eating Disorder Support
Ongoing support group for teens with a diagnosis of Anorexia and Bulimia.
Patient must be involved with medical and individual treatment to qualify for this group.
Expressive Art Therapy
This group uses art modalities as an expression of the child’s internal world
Middle School Boys
Open group to help middle school boys deal with issues of self-esteem, anger management, and decision making
Middle School Girls
Open group to help middle school girls deal with issues of self-esteem, anger management, and decision making. Parents attend 1st Friday of the month.
Meet the Doc
An informal forum for parents who want to know more about Child & Family Services to drop in and ask questions. This is also for parents considering medication evaluations for their children.
Parenting Skills Workshop
An ongoing 4-session didactic workshop focuses on teaching parents the basics of effective parenting strategies
Parenting Strategies for Strong Willed Teens
Parent training program designed specifically for parents of strong-willed teens
Teen Depression Overview Class
One-session overview for teens and parents to discuss the nature of depression and cognitive treatment
Teen Depression
Ongoing support group focusing on cognitive/behavioral interventions to help teens deal with depression
Teen Support
Ongoing group for graduates of the Teen Depression Group, and open to all teens dealing with general issues of adolescence
Teen Depression Parent Support
A support group for parents with depressed teenagers
Teen/Family Orientation
Orientation class for initial services to Child and family services
Teen IOP
Group to help stabilize teens in severe crisis and to prevent psychiatric hospitalization
Teen IOP – Parent
Support group for parents with children and teens enrolled in the IOP program
Teen IOP After-Care Support
A step down from the full IOP Program. A support group for teens only.
Multi-Family IOP
Group for families in severe crisis for mutual support & feedback as well as therapeutic guidance
Young Socialization
A time-limited 8-session group to help children develop appropriate and effective social skills
Young Socialization – Parent
A time-limited 8-session group to help parents acquire an understanding of the developmental stages of children and develop effective parenting skills
GLBT
This group is for youth ages 13-17 who identify on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, or “questioning” sexual orientation, and transgender identified, or those on the gender non-conforming spectrum, will also be considered
PTSD: Immediate Response
First intervention for children and families who have been exposed to a traumatic event that is having an impact in their daily functioning
