Our Story
It was 1958 . . . a small group of our physicians began practicing on Fourth Street, in San Rafael, hospitalizing their patients at the San Francisco Kaiser on Geary Street. In 1966, we purchased the former Terra Linda Valley Convalescent Hospital at 99 Montecillo Road. Ten years later we opened the present five-story hospital and medical office building on the Montecillo site. The original A-frame building can still be seen today as you drive up to the San Rafael Medical Center.
Primary and specialty outpatient care, as well as hospital and emergency services are provided in San Rafael. In an effort to bring some of these services to the people we care for in Sonoma County, we opened our first satellite facility in Santa Rosa in 1979. This area grew rapidly and Santa Rosa became a medical center and hospital.
In January 1989, we opened our second satellite facility in Petaluma. The two story medical office provides primary health care through the departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Optometry, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Pharmacy, Laboratory, X-Ray, Health Education, Allergy Injections and Optical Sales also provide services. Medical Office Building 2 opened in the fall of 2003 as part of our effort to offer our members more convenient access to the full range of specialists. Our Petaluma physicians refer patients to specialists in both our San Rafael and Petaluma locations. They admit patients to our hospital in San Rafael.
In 1990, we again wanted to bring our services out into the community, this time to our Northern Marin residents. In July of that year we leased space in Novato at 97 San Marin Drive and opened our third satellite Medical Office. At the present time, capacity limits us in providing all Northern Marin members their care in Novato, requiring some members to obtain service in San Rafael or Petaluma. The Novato physicians also refer and admit patients to the San Rafael Medical Center.
In April 1994, construction was completed on a second medical office in San Rafael on the corner of Nova Albion and Montecillo and a parking structure behind the hospital. Mental Health Services moved one-half mile from the Medical Center to 820 Las Gallinas in San Rafael.
In 1999, Downtown San Rafael opened on the corner of Third Street & A Street in a new three story building. Services offered include Internal Medicine, Eye Care Services, Dermatology, Cosmetic Services, Nephrology, Pharmacy, Laboratory and Radiology.
