Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

Maintaining good nutrition during cancer treatment is important in achieving the best treatment outcomes. Preserving muscle mass and body weight, or preventing excess weight gain during this time can be challenging. Incorporating a variety of foods including tasty and nutrient rich options keeps eating enjoyable. Eating smaller more frequent meals can avoid discomfort and ensure adequate calories. Aim for a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats at each meal or snack. If extra calories are needed, choose higher fat or protein foods to add to your favorite dishes. This can add calories without adding much volume. Sometimes, the taste, texture or smell of foods becomes a challenge during treatment. Blending foods into smoothies or soups or sauces can provide nutritious alternatives to solid foods.  Caregivers, friends or family members may prepare your food if you are feeling too tired from your treatment. Occasionally, a nutritional supplement drink is recommended to provide extra calories.  Avoid bacterial and chemical contaminants by thoroughly washing and cooking foods to their proper and safe temperature. Be sure to stay hydrated, by adding a variety of liquids throughout the day.  Maintaining a proper and safe diet will help you obtain the nutrients you need to maintain your strength, heal and feel better during your treatment.
