Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach
The Trauma Injury Prevention Program is dedicated to the promotion of healthy behaviors and the prevention of unintentional injury and death through intervention, education, and outreach. We seek to reduce the prevalence and related morbidity and mortality of the most common causes of injury in our community including:
- Fall prevention
- Motor vehicle collision prevention
- Violence prevention
Developed in 2009 as an important part of our South Sacramento Level II Trauma Center, the Trauma Injury Prevention program and outreach is facilitated through community partnerships, program funding, and education.
The trauma department seeks out evidence-based programs, and works with local law enforcement, fire departments and other public agencies, educational institutions and local community organizations to leverage relationships to benefit the community we serve in south Sacramento.
Kaiser Permanente actively participates in a variety of community events focused on safety and injury prevention. Additionally, we offer many classes to the community that are designed to promote safe behaviors and prevent injuries, including Stop the Bleed, Sacramento Violence Intervention Program (SVIP), fall reduction education and classes, in addition to distracted and impaired driving education.
Some of our programs include:
Violence Prevention |
Stop the Bleed
The top cause of preventable death in trauma is bleeding. It is estimated that twenty percent of people who have died from traumatic injuries could have survived with on-site and immediate bleeding control. Bleeding could be caused by injuries from a car crash, an injury at home or work, or in a mass casualty incident.
BleedingControl.org is an initiative of the American College of Surgeons and Hartford Consensus, providing individuals with the training, tools, and knowledge necessary to stop life-threatening bleeding during the moments before first responders arrive.
For Stop the Bleed training please contact our Injury Prevention and Community Outreach Coordinator, Ana Van Engelen at (916) 688-6425 or anastasia.d.van-engelen@kp.org. |
Sacramento Violence Intervention Program (SVIP)
In 2010, the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Trauma Department launched the Sacramento Violence Intervention Program (SVIP), the first hospital bedside youth violence intervention program based in the Sacramento region. In cooperation with WellSpace Health, Inc., a community health center, this program provides immediate intervention services to young people age 15 to 26 who are treated at the medical center for violent injuries. Intervention specialists provide comprehensive case management and follow-up services to injured youths for at least six months, helping them make positive life changes.
Fall Prevention |
The Sacramento Ballet and YMCA
Kaiser Permanente Trauma supports fall prevention classes facilitated through the Sacramento Ballet and the YMCA of Greater Sacramento.
The Sacramento Ballet holds a dance-based movement class intended to help improve and maintain balance and overall health.
Additionally, a partnership with Cosumnes Fire and the YMCA identified the need for fall prevention education in senior homes throughout Elk Grove and on site at the YMCA. These classes are all open to the public.
Motor Vehicle Collision Prevention |
Impact Teen Drivers
A national program that teaches teens and parents about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving and reckless driving. This evidence-based program focuses on connecting with teens on an emotional level to influence long-term attitude and behavior changes. We will help facilitate the program in schools or as a Train the Trainer program. impactteendrivers.org.
Every 15 Minutes
Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento trauma and emergency department staff participates with the CHP and other fire and law enforcement professionals to carry out the Every 15 Minutes program to educate students at local high schools about the dangers of drinking and driving. Our team assists with moulage for the on-site crash victims in addition to facilitating mock resuscitations by trauma surgeons in the trauma bay, and a visit by organ procurement professional and more.
