Day of the Study Guidelines
- Have dinner prior to arriving at the sleep lab, as no food is available on site. Bring a snack if needed.
- Bring the typical supplies you would need for a sleep-over or stay at a hotel.
- If your child requires diapers or formula, please make sure to bring enough for at least 12 hours. There is no refrigerator on site, so bring a cooler if needed.
- Bring and take your child’s regular medication (in the original bottle) as prescribed by your physician unless otherwise directed.
- Please wash your child’s hair. Do not use any conditioner, hair styling products, lotions, or oil on your child’s face or body.
- Avoid consuming any caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks, sodas, or chocolate) on the day of the study as this may make it difficult for your child to fall asleep.
- Avoid having your child nap during the day as this may make it difficult for your child to fall asleep. If your infant or young child typically naps during the day, consider shortening the duration of the nap, if possible.
- Do not bring your CPAP machine if you currently use one. If your child already has a CPAP mask prescribed, please do bring it.
- It is necessary to bring sleeping attire. Patients must bring two-piece attire to allow for ease of placement of monitoring equipment.
- Please bring toiletries (e.g. toothpaste, toothbrush). The sleep lab provides towels and bedding.
- Feel free to bring your child’s books, homework, favorite DVDs, tablet/laptop (we have free Wi-Fi) and toys.
- To prepare your child for a sleep study, please talk about the study ahead of time. You can refer to the study as a “sleep over” with you in the lab.
Night of the Study Guidelines
- Depending on the type of study being performed, it will take approximately 60-90 minutes for the sleep technologist to apply electrodes and various sensors.
- Patients are encouraged to start their sleep study after sensor applications, around 8:00 pm.
- Please note that assistance from parent/caregiver will help make the study successful. Depending on how the child does, parent may not get a restful sleep.
- Once the study begins, distractions such as television, radios, cell phones, laptops, and tablets will need to remain off for the duration of the study.
- You and your child will be awakened between 5:00 am and 5:30 am. Once the sensors are removed, you are free to leave. Please note that the paste used for the leads may be difficult to remove initially.
- All patients must exit the lab by 6:30 am.
After the Sleep Study
- A sleep physician will review and interpret the sleep study. You can anticipate receiving a phone call or secure email to review your results and go over next steps within 8-12 business days.
