Overnight Sleep Lab Instructions - Oral Appliance
The information found on this page is for a MATRx (Oral Appliance Titration) study.
Preparing for your MATRx Study
Please check with your dentist prior to your appointment to make sure that you are a good candidate for the oral appliance study. You would not qualify for the oral appliance study if you are under the age of 18 years or have any of the following:
- Temporary crowns or pending dental work
- Severe respiratory disorder(s)
- Pain or soreness to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
- Loose tooth/teeth
- Full dentures
- Less than 6 healthy teeth in each jaw (6 upper AND 6 in lower)
- Gingival or dental soreness
- Advanced periodontal disease
- Severe nasal congestion that impairs breathing when the mouth is closed
- Not seen by a dentist for a regular check up in the past 5 years
What to Expect During the MATRx Study
- A Sleep Technologist will fit you for a temporary mouth tray that you’ll be wearing throughout the
- The MATRx device is controlled remotely while you sleep.
- It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get all the preparations done to start the study.
- You will need to sign a consent form to start the stud
Use of MATRx May Cause
- Teeth movement or changes in dental occlusion
- Gingival or dental soreness
- Pain or soreness to the Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ)
- Obstruction of oral breathing
- Excessive salvation
- Crowns or implants to become loose or dislodged
Preparing for the Study
- Have dinner prior to arriving at the sleep lab as we will begin your study setup immediately upon arrival.
- Bring and take your regular medication in the original bottle as prescribed by your physician unless otherwise directed.
- Wash your hair and do not use any conditioner, hair styling products. Remove weaves, braids and wigs (We need to be able to attach sensors directly to your scalp – we use a thick paste that will need to be washed out after the study).
- Do not wear makeup, moisturizing cream, lotions or oil on your face or body.
- Men should shave facial hair stubble, but a beard or mustache is acceptable.
- Maintain your usual daytime schedule and avoid any physical exercise that you normally don’t do.
- Try to refrain from taking naps.
- Do not consume alcoholic beverages or caffeinated beverages less than 6 hours prior to your study.
- If you think that you may have difficulty sleeping in a lab environment, we recommend that you bring one dose of Ambien (This will not compromise the quality of your study). You will need to obtain a prescription from your primary care physician prior to the sleep test as we do not distribute any medications in the sleep lab. Do not take this medication prior to arrival and always inform the sleep technician prior to taking it.

What to Bring
- Sleeping attire and slippers (two-piece is recommended to allow for ease of placement of monitoring equipment).
- Toiletries e.g. toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brush, soap and shampoo (We provide towels).
- A book, magazines or tablet (there is no cable TV, but we do offer free Wi-Fi throughout the building).
- Do not bring your CPAP machine if you currently use one, but please do bring your mask if coming for titration study.
During the Study
- Depending on what type of study performed, it may take up to 60-90 minutes to apply electrodes and sensors.
- Once the study begins, distractions such as cell phone, radio and tablet will need to remain off through the night.
- You will be awakened around 5:00 am and can take a shower and enjoy a hot beverage as you exit the lab.
What to Expect after your Sleep Study
- A physician specialized in sleep medicine will review and interpret your study.
- You can anticipate receiving a phone call or secure email to review your results and go over next steps within 5-8 business days.
