Newborn Nursery (Oakland)
Welcome to the Kaiser Oakland Newborn Nursery Care Team!
Our physician team is composed of general pediatricians who specialize in providing care to newborn infants. In addition, our inpatient team includes other health care professionals, including Ob/Gyn-pediatric nurses, lactation nurse specialists, pediatric residents, medical students, social workers, and patient care coordinators, all committed to providing state of the art pediatric hospital care.
It is our goal to provide high quality, personalized medical services to our patients from the moment they are born. We will also strive to achieve open communication with parents and the patient’s primary care provider to involve them in treatment and diagnostic decisions. Each week there will be one staff pediatrician (the pediatric attending) who coordinates medical care during daytime hours. The pediatric attending changes each Thursday and cares for all the pediatric patients in the nursery for one week until the following Wednesday. This pediatrician makes rounds on all nursery infants every day to assure that care is coordinated and needs are promptly addressed. In addition, they teach and guide the pediatric residents regarding care of all babies so that they can provide patient care during evening, night and early morning hours. There is also a staff pediatrician available in the hospital overnight who is primarily responsible for care of patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
We are proud to provide around the clock inpatient coverage by pediatricians who specialize in hospital care. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is headed by Neonatologists, pediatric physicians who have undergone subspecialty training in the management of newborns & premature infants who are critically ill. One of our Neonatologists is present daily and is available to consult with the care team at all times.
We want you & your child’s stay to be as safe and pleasant as possible. We have created a Nursery service that provides experienced and comprehensive care for babies during this important first step into the world. Our program provides a family friendly environment as well as modern treatment modalities. Our team of physicians and health professionals is committed to providing you and your child with a positive experience and the best possible health outcomes.
Because of Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to comprehensive care, be assured that we will make every effort to inform your child’s primary care physician of the care provided while in the Nursery so that he or she can continue to monitor your child’s growth and development. In addition, we provide a smooth transition between Nursery and outpatient care by scheduling a visit for your child with his/her primary care physician soon after discharge. Our Ob/Gyn-pediatric nurses, discharge planners and patient care coordinators help coordinate all the details of sending babies home from the hospital, from parent education to follow up appointments. We also work with our outpatient lactation nurse specialists, nurses who are able to answer many of the questions that come up for families after they bring their baby home, and they can check on weight gain, breast feeding, and other important health issues for both mother and baby. Together, we do everything we can to start your baby on a healthy life path!
