Adult Psychotherapy Groups


NOTE: The Groups offered in the department are ONLY available to established patients in the department. Access to most groups is by referral from the primary clinician in the East Bay department of psychiatry. Descriptor for each group is only to give a general understanding of the nature of the group. Patients who are interested in attending any group should discuss their interest with their primary clinician in the department. Referral to groups is based on medical necessity as well as goodness of fit with the particular group. This listing is subject to change without prior notice.

OAKLAND

ACT for Recovery
Uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as mindfulness to move towards living in alignment with values in eating disorder recovery.

Affect Regulation for Moods Associated with Psychotic and Bipolar Spectrum Diagnoses
Psychoeducation and regulation of moods associated with Psychotic Spectrum and Bipolar 1.

African American Men in Life Transition
Support group for African American men for the management of life transitions & difficulties.

Bipolar 101 Class
One-session-only.  Patients will learn about Bipolar and Related Disorders and generally recommended treatment and will be oriented to treatment options in the clinic.

Bipolar Education and Support group
Education/therapy to understand bipolar illness, coping strategies, and relapse prevention.

Bipolar Grad group
Ongoing support group to reinforce skills and tools from Bipolar Education & Support group.

Body Image Group
Group that explores your body image by looking at its roots while addressing relationships, social media, and weight stigma in a safe and supportive environment.

CBT for Psychosis
CBT strategies for psychotic spectrum disorders.  Learn skills to help manage and/or decrease symptoms such as paranoid thinking, hearing voices, difficulty with conversations with others.

Coping Skills
General coping skills and psycho-education group covering such topics as mindfulness, healthy problem-solving skills, self-awareness, and sleep hygiene.

DBT Skills Group
DBT skills training for Borderline Personality Disorders.  For patients in DBT program.  Teaches distress tolerance, mindfulness & emotion regulation.

DBT Women’s Graduate Group
Patients provide support and insight to one another with a focus on DBT skills.

Depression Stabilization
A group for patients with moderate to severe depressive episode and for whom depression is the primary concern at this time.

Depression Treatment group

A group for patients with mild to moderate depression.  Focus is on behavior activation, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, relapse prevention.

Dinner Support Group
The group will role model appropriate eating habits, portions, and mealtime conversation.

Divorce group
Support group for patients (gay or straight) experiencing distress because of a break-up of a committed relationship

Eating Disorder Recovery Group
Provides ongoing peer support to patients in active recovery from their eating disorder

Family Group
Information and support to partners, family members, and caregivers of patients with major psychiatric diagnoses

Free to be Me
Psycho-education and support group for transgender group for people in all stages of transition

Free to be Me Trans Masculine
This group is for anyone who identifies as masculine, including people who have a more masculine non-binary or fluid identity as well as trans men.

Free to be Me Young Adults
This group is for young adults who identify as Trans*, non-binary, agender or gender non-conforming

Healthy Aging
Psychoeducation; support and coping strategies for patients 55 and older

 Intensive Mindfulness for Acute Depression

Intensive program for severely depressed adults.  Focuses on mindfulness, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Intensive Support Group
5-week program for those with moderate to severe levels of distress

LGBTQ Spectrum Support group
General support group for the LGBTQIQ communities (all gender and sexualities) who identify anywhere on the gender and/or sexuality spectrums. Please note age criteria of 24-45.

Life Skills Group (Psychotic Spectrum)
Patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective illness.

Lunch Support Group
A meal group where patients bring a meal and receive support to eat that meal from peers and from group leaders

Multi-Family Group (Psychotic Spectrum)
A highly structured, long-term group treatment for patients diagnosed with psychotic spectrum disorder and their families

Nourish: Feeding Your Whole Self
This class is an introduction to the non-diet approach to eating and body acceptance.

OCD Exposure Group

Group using Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention to address obsessive compulsive disorders.

OCD Graduate Homework Group
Ongoing weekly group using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and other coping skills to help patients manage their OCD symptoms.

Panic Disorder
Uses a Cognitive Behavior Therapy approach including exposure and cognitive restructuring.

Peripartum Depression
Psycho-education, support, and coping skills for patients with a diagnosis of depression in pregnancy or postpartum

Recovery Circle
Explores the impact of substance use and mental health on their lives, and develop goals to create positive change

Relationship Group
An interactive group for individuals experiencing relationship problems

Rise PoC Recovery Group
Provides a supportive space and an opportunity for healing for persons of color who are struggling with body image, food, and/or other Eating Disorder related behaviors

Seeking Safety
Skills based group for the treatment of PTSD

Social Phobia
Provides support, education, Cognitive Behavior Therapy learning, and role-playing for patients with Social Phobia

Spanish Coping Skills
A 6-week skills-based group focused on providing general coping skills and psycho-education in Spanish.

Spanish Trauma Group
Focuses on grounding techniques, distress, tolerance, social  connection, and self-compassion exercises for patients with extreme stress management problems specific to trauma related problems.  In Spanish.

Survivors of Intimate Partner Abuse
Psycho-education and support for female victims and survivors of intimate partner abuse

Trauma Graduate group
Support group for graduates of at least one of the Trauma Life Skills group modules

Trauma Grounding Skills
Skills group focusing on grounding techniques, distress tolerance, social connection, and self-compassion exercises for patients with extreme stress management problems specific to trauma-related problems.

Trauma Life Skills
A group based on common life skill deficits of patients with chronic PTSD/trauma

Turning the Tables
The group covers Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills tailored for those struggling with eating disorders

Wise Mind
Skills-based, psychoeducational topics for patients struggling with emotion regulation, distress tolerance issues, and interpersonal problems.

Wise Mind (Spanish)
Skills-based, psychoeducational topics for patients struggling with emotion regulation, distress tolerance issues, and interpersonal problems.  (Facilitated by Spanish speaking provider.)

Worry Group
Utilizes the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy protocol to teach a different way of relating to thoughts, feelings, and sensations without struggling to change them.
