Hospital Visitation Policy

Visitors are welcome and encouraged at the Oakland Medical Center Hospital. Your family and friends can play a key role in helping you recover and supporting you when you leave the hospital. Each patient room has a family zone designed the comfort of your visitors, including a bed for overnight stays.

Family includes any person not legally related to the patient, spouses, domestic partners, both different-sex and same-sex significant others. Family also includes a minor patient’s parents, regardless of gender of either parent. Parenthood includes: legal parents, foster parents, same-sex parent, step-parents, those serving in loco parentis, and other persons acting as caretakers.

Visitors include any person of the patient’s choosing, if the patient has decision-making capacity, regardless of sex, economic status, educational background, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, sexual identity, gender identity or marital status.

Visiting guidelines vary depending on the patient’s reason for hospitalization and are at the discretion of the medical team. If you have concerns regarding these guidelines, please discuss them with your nurse.

Important considerations regarding visitation:

  • Because people in the hospital often have compromised immune systems, anyone who is experiencing a cough, cold, or other symptoms of illness should not visit.
  • To prevent the spread of illness, visitors should wash their hands frequently, and upon entering and leaving the patient’s room.
  • Visitors under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. This is for the health of both patients and children.
  • Under certain circumstances, physicians or staff may ask visitors to leave the room while examining a patient or performing a procedure.
  • Due to the fact that some people have latex allergies, no latex balloons shall be brought into the hospital.

The most important consideration when visiting should always be the safety of the patient and his or her right to a restful environment that supports health.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 7th Floor
Family members and friends may visit anytime, but a maximum of two visitors per patient is allowed in the room at any one time. Your spouse, partner, or other family member may also stay overnight with your permission.

Labor and Delivery, 3rd Floor
With your permission, adult family members and friends, as well as children of the new mother who are over age 12, may visit anytime. In the event of a cesarean section or other situation that requires surgical intervention, your spouse or birthing partner may be with you in the operating suite, at the discretion of the medical team.

Maternity, 3rd Floor
Your family and friends are welcome to visit anytime, and your spouse, partner, or other family member may stay overnight in your room with your permission.

Medical Surgical Units, 7th-11th Floor
Family and friends are welcome to visit at any time and may stay overnight with your permission.

Perioperative Services, 2nd Floor
Following a brief intake process, a maximum of two visitors may stay with you in the perioperative holding area, until you’re taken to the operating room. For your safety, no visitors are allowed in the operating room or in the post-anesthesia recovery room.
