Classes and Groups

The following classes are offered through Kaiser’s Department of Child Psychiatry. To register for these classes, call Child Psychiatry at 916-525-6710 Please know that babysitting is NOT provided. Classes/groups below are taught/conducted in English with an interpreter provided in preferred language unless otherwise indicated.

Parenting Young Children Group (Parents Only)

This class teaches parents of 3-5 year olds how to adjust expectations and discipline techniques according to child development and temperament issues. This 4-session class starts on the first Friday of every month, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. , at the Elk Grove Kaiser.

ADHD Overview Class (Parents Only)

This is class provides an overview of AD/HD for those families whose kids have been diagnosed with AD/HD. It briefly covers history, etiology, symptoms, co morbid conditions, and treatment interventions, including information on 504 Plans and IEPs. This class meets every Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at South Sacramento Child Psychiatry Dept at the Wyndham Building.

Social Skills Groups

This group will assist kids ages 8-12 with issues around Anger Management, Self Esteem and Peer Relations—in particular dealing with teasing and bullying. Each child must be accompanied by a parent. This 4-session series is available starting the 1st Weds from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at South Sac Child Psychiatry Dept. at the Wyndham Building or starting the 3rd Thurs, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Elk Grove Psychiatry Dept.

Anxiety Group

This group will assist kids ages 8-12 with issues around anxiety and worries. Each child must be accompanied by a parent. This 3-session series begins the first Wednesday of each month. This group meets on Weds from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Elk Grove Psychiatry Dept.

School Solutions

This ongoing group is available to assist parents and children/adolescents in reconnecting to one another to improve communication, collaboration, and positive interactions in order to better approach school stressors and school-based problems. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. This group is available at Elk Grove Kaiser, Tuesdays 4 to 5:30 p.m. to 3rd-6th graders and their parents the 1st and 3rd week of each month, and to 7th-8th graders and their parents the 2nd and 4th week of each month.

Young Teens Group

A place for young teens and preteens and their parents to meet and talk. Group is for mature 6th- 8th graders and middle schoolers. Stresses and challenges include school and relationship problems, developing self esteem and personal identity; and healthy ways of dealing with peer pressures. Each teen must be accompanied by an adult. New members accepted as openings become available. This 8-session series is available Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at South Sac Child Psychiatry Dept. at the Wyndham Building.

Teen Stress Group

This group promotes awareness of contemporary teen stressors and their impact on parent-teen relations. Group includes discussion of coping skills, mood management, problem-solving, and negotiation. Each teen must be accompanied by an adult. New members accepted as openings become available. This 8-session series is available any Monday or Wednesday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at South Sac Child Psychiatry Dept. at the Wyndham Building.

Parent Solutions Group (Parents Only)

This Group is available weekly for parents with concerns regarding their child/teens behavior at home and school. You must call ahead and register. Call 525-6710 to register (same day ok). This weekly class is on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in our Elk Grove Psych. Department or also on Thursdays, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at South Sac Child Psychiatry Department at the Wyndham Building.

Spanish Parenting Group (Solamente Padres)

Esta clase es para ayudar ha los padres manejar problemas de conducta communes de sus hijos. La clase sera’ cada martes por quatro semanas, 9:30 ha 11 a.m., en la oficina de Elk Grove. La clase esta abierta para registrace cada semana.

Adolescent Chemical Dependency Family Orientation

This Class covers adolescent drug and alcohol use patterns, symptom identification, and treatment options. Each teen must be accompanied by parent/guardian. This is a 1-session orientation class offered on Mondays, 3:30 to 5 p.m. or Wednesday 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the South Valley Centre (8247 E. Stockton Blvd.) Please come in 30 minutes early to fill out paperwork.
