Polysomnogram
Overnight polysomnography (PSG) is a sleep study generally performed in the sleep laboratory. It involves recording of various physiologic parameters by a sleep technician. Depending on the type of sleep disorder/condition being evaluated, certain sensors may not be used.
These physiologic parameters include: EEG (brain waves to determine sleep stages and occ epileptiform discharges), EOG (eye movements in REM stage sleep), EMG (limb movements and other movement disorders), ECG (heart rhythm), respiratory (including airflow, breathing effort), oximetry (oxygen level), transcutaneous carbon dioxide, video monitoring.
For some patients, CPAP or a similar device may be used during the study to determine if the sleep apnea or hypoventilation can be effectively treated.
