Please follow the instructions below for preparation the day of your overnight sleep test:

  • PLEASE BE ON TIME FOR YOUR TEST. Tardiness may result in cancellation of your test. The technician has discretion in this matter.
  • SHOWER thoroughly, wash and dry your hair prior to coming in for your test.
  • DO NOT USE hair gel, oil, grease (of any kind), hair spray, cologne or perfume, shaving lotion or any kind of lotion on your skin. If you wear your hair in cornrows or any style making it difficult to get to the scalp, they will need to be undone for proper application. There are wires that need to be placed on your scalp. If your hair is found to be greasy or stiff from hair products the night of the test, your test may be canceled at the technician’s discretion.
  • Brush your teeth and bring nightwear for sleeping in. We prefer that you wear loose fitting shorts and top. Men MUST wear pajamas or shorts over their underwear. Underwear alone will
not be accepted. Nightgowns are acceptable but not preferred as they tend to ride up during the night. NUDITY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  • Men should be clean shaven, especially around the chin area. However, if you wear a beard please do not trim it close, it is better to leave it long.
  • Artificial nails, artificial hair, and nail polish can affect the reliability of your sleep study. Removing them will reduce the risk of needing to repeat the test.
  • Avoid taking any naps during the day of the test.
  • You should avoid caffeine throughout the day and absolutely NO caffeine should be consumed after 12:00 noon. Some products containing caffeine are coffee, tea, chocolate, sodas, hot chocolate, etc.
  • Eat dinner as usual; however, do not eat 1 hour prior to your appointment. Diabetics may eat closer to test time but keep meal light. Please alert the technician if you are a diabetic when
    you arrive.
  • If you have a nasal mask, full face mask or nasal pillows bring it with you and all tubing for titration studies.
  • You may bring your own blanket and pillows for your comfort.
  • Bring something to read in case the opportunity presents itself.
  • Take medications as usual as we do not dispense them.. Also, bring a list of the meds you are currently taking.
  • If you take a sleeping pill, please do not take until you are instructed by the technician.
  • Bring a camera with you. Some of our patients often wish they had a picture of themselves all wired up.
  • If you are sick the day of your scheduled test, please do not come. If you do come in sick, you may be asked to leave and told the test cannot be done. Please call the lab to cancel and reschedule appointment.
