Planning a Trip Abroad?
BY ANTHONYIf international travel is in your future, Kaiser Permanente’s expert travel nurses and new website can help you prepare for your trip. We can provide you with personalized advice from a registered nurse at a time and place that’s convenient for you. We recommend you plan at least one month in advance of your trip but even if leaving this week, we can assist you.
Here’s how it works:
Call 1-866-454-8855 to schedule your telephone appointment. Appointments are available 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Go to kp.org/mydoctor/travel and complete a brief questionnaire. “You’ll be asked to provide your itinerary and activities along with any vaccines you’ve received outside of Kaiser Permanente,” explains Nancy Goler, MD, clinical director for travel services for Kaiser Permanente Northern California. “These will be used to prepare your recommendations.”
Complete your appointment. Based on your medical records and the information provided in your questionnaire, a registered nurse will advise you about immunizations, medications, and other precautionary measures you should take.
Get your medications and immunizations. After your appointment, a travel physician will review your recommendations, provide final approval on any medications or immunizations you may need, and make them available to you at an injection clinic or pharmacy of your choice.
Take your medical record with you. Visit kp.org/mydoctor/travel before you leave to download an electronic summary of your current medical record to your computer, tablet, or smartphone. “This is critical information for medical personnel in the event that anyone in your family requires medical treatment during your trip,” Dr. Goler says.
