San Francisco Physician Honored for Exceptional Contributions
Bethan Powell, MD, Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Gynecologic Oncology Department, is 1 of 5 physicians from The Permanente Medical Group recently honored with the Sidney R. Garfield Exceptional Contribution Award. Named after its founder, the award recognizes innovative physicians who have developed systems and programs that have a significant impact on patients, colleagues, and the broader community.
Dr. Powell has dedicated her career to researching and helping women mitigate hereditary cancer risk, founding the multidisciplinary Hereditary Cancer Center at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, and then collaborating with physician colleagues across KP Northern California to create a network of 5 additional centers. At each location, teams of specialists identify patients with any of the approximately 30 known cancer-related mutations via genetic screening, and then offer risk-reducing medical and surgical options and personalized cancer-screening schedules. Patients also receive consultation on targeted treatment, clinical trials, and novel therapies, and are closely tracked to ensure consistent follow-up. Dr. Powell has published more than 80 studies on hereditary cancer and gynecologic oncology in medical journals and is considered a national expert in the field.
