Women's Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic

Women at high risk for cancer are invited to participate in the Cancer Risk Clinic at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland. 

You have already taken a big step by learning about your genetic risk for cancer. Knowing your risk lets you arrange specialized care to help lower your chance to develop cancer and to find developing cancer as early as possible. The medical decisions you face related to your cancer risk are complex. It can help to have input from a team of specialists. The Cancer Risk Clinic saves time by having all the specialists you need in one place. It also provides you with more coordinated care and consensus opinions for your treatment plan. Our team works together with you and your family to personalize your cancer screening schedule and address all aspects of risk reduction options.

This program is for women newly diagnosed as high risk through the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Genetics Department, as well as those who seek follow-up care. Women who are coming from outside of Oakland can be seen for an initial consultation. We will share our recommendations with breast surgeons at your home facility.

Our Oakland Women’s Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic offers you cutting edge advice from a team of cancer experts. The field of cancer genetics changes rapidly. Our team members have international involvement in the field of hereditary cancers and are leading experts in the diagnosis and management of inherited risk for breast and gynecologic cancers.

Customize Your Cancer Care

You can consult with any or all of our specialists as part your care with the Cancer Risk Clinic. Your genetic counselor and you will decide which experts you want to meet with and set-up a schedule for your clinic visit. Your medical history is reviewed by the team before your visit, so we are familiar with your personal situation and needs. On the day of the clinic you meet with each scheduled expert. You can also request input from additional team members. You are encouraged to bring a list of questions to make sure you get the answers you need. The visit may also include a physical examination, if needed.

You are welcome to bring a family member or support person to be with you during your visit at the clinic.

At the end of your visit, a customized plan of care will be developed and reviewed with you. Your care plan will include:

  • A personalized schedule for cancer screening
  • Risk reduction recommendations, based on your needs
  • Educational resources to take home
  • Future appointment plans

You will get a summary of the recommendations from your visit. Your regular healthcare providers will also receive the
same summary through the electronic medical record.
