Preoperative Medicine (POM)
POM appointments are usually scheduled when patients are given their surgery date.
The Perioperative Medicine (POM) Clinic is a division of the Department of Anesthesiology that is staffed by physicians specializing in hospital based medicine and nurse practitioners who have been given special training in evaluating and preparing patients for surgery. These clinicians work closely with the Department of Anesthesiology to evaluate and prepare patients for surgery. POM appointments are either telephone appointments or clinic visits with a physician or nurse practitioner. Your surgeon selects the type of appointment based on the complexity of the surgical procedure and your medical history. As part of your evaluation you may expect that your POM provider will:
- Review your medical history and medications
- Review pertinent medical tests
- Order any additional medical tests necessary to make sure it is safe to proceed with surgery
- Communicate any concerns that may arise to your anesthesiologist and/or surgeon, as appropriate
Preparing for your POM Appointment
- Have a complete list of your medications, including over-the-counter medications, available for your appointment.
- Make sure you tell your POM provider if you or any family members have experienced any problems with anesthesia.
