Your POM Clinic Appointment
Once your surgery date has been set, your surgeon’s office will schedule your preoperative appointment with a hospital medicine physician or a nurse practitioner (NP) specializing in perioperative medicine. Depending on your procedure and your medical condition, you may be scheduled for a formal office visit or an evaluation by telephone. This preoperative appointment will assess whether your general health is appropriate for undergoing surgery and help to optimize your general health prior to surgery.
POM appointments are either telephone appointments with a NP or a clinic visit with a physician. Your surgeon selects the type of appointment based on the complexity of the surgical procedure and your medical history. As part of your evaluation you may expect that your POM provider will:
- Review your medical history and medications
- Review pertinent medical tests
- Order any additional medical tests necessary to make sure it is safe to proceed with surgery
- Communicate any concerns that may arise to your anesthesiologist and/or surgeon, as appropriate
