Oncology

This information will help you as you begin your treatment in the Oncology clinic. Our staff welcomes your questions and is pleased to help you. We are located in the Orchid Center, 1200 El Camino Real, South San Francisco.

Chemotherapy Orientation/Counseling Class

To help prepare you for chemotherapy, we will arrange for you to attend a class taught by our Oncology Nurse Practitioner or our Oncology Pharmacist. Attending this class prior to your first treatment is very important. We encourage you to bring 1-2 family members or friends (who are most involved in your care) to the class. The class will include an instructional presentation, a question and answer session, and a walk-through of the chemotherapy infusion center. You will receive an informational handout to take home with you at the end of the class.

The class meets on Tuesdays from 1:45 to 4 p.m. Come to the Orchid Center waiting room at 1:45 p.m. and register for the class with the Registration desk.

Treatment Appointment

The time of your appointment and the length of your treatment depends on the type of chemotherapy you are receiving. The next appointment with your doctor or nurse practitioner is usually the day before your next treatment. In general, you will need to go to the lab for blood tests the day before your chemotherapy treatment. Please remember to take your pre-chemotherapy medication as directed by your doctor or nurse practitioner.

During your Treatment Time

Reading materials and a TV will be available to you. You are welcome to bring portable electronic devices and snacks. One friend or family member is welcome to be with you during your treatment. Current space limitation prevents us from inviting more than one guest. For safety reasons, children under 16 are not permitted in the treatment areas.

After your Chemotherapy Treatment

After your first chemotherapy treatment, please e-mail your doctor or nurse practitioner with a progress report. Let us know how you are doing. If do not already have access to the kp.org website, please sign up online by visiting the website from any computer; www. members.kp.org or visit the Health Education Department (located in the main hospital).

After any of your treatments, if you need additional medication to feel better, please contact the Oncology Pharmacist at 650-742-3251.

If you do not already have an answering machine, please get one as soon as possible so that we can communicate important information regarding your treatments.
