Our Genetic Counselors

Erin Nielsen, MS, LCGC

My Background

I am a California native but grew up in Northern and Central California. I lived in several coastal communities and spent my childhood on the water or playing in the Redwoods.

Education & Experience

As soon as I learned about the field of genetic counseling I knew that it was the right career for me. I enjoyed my education in molecular, cell and developmental biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, however I wanted to work with people. I had already worked in cancer research for several years. I needed a career that would allow me to put that knowledge into practice, and genetic counseling was the perfect combination.

I joined Kaiser Permanente in June of 2007 after completing my master’s degree in genetic counseling at California State University, Northridge. As a student, I interned at several hospitals throughout Southern California. I was able to see how different medical groups provided care. My time at Kaiser Permanente was by far my favorite experience. I loved the integrated healthcare system, the organization’s innovation and patient-centered care. Now I am proud to be a part of this organization and to be surrounded by wonderful, dedicated colleagues.

About My Practice

My passion is hereditary cancer genetics. I believe the work I do can help save lives by empowering people to make decisions to reduce their risk for cancer. It allows people to help their children and other family members make life-saving decisions. Every day I am an advocate to give my patients the best care possible. I appreciate providing the support, risk assessment and advocacy for the individual and their families.

How I Thrive

I enjoy being with my children, family and friends, gardening, reading, working on my home and camping.
