Our Genetic Counselors

Katherine Peters, MS, LCGC

My Background

I was born and raised in South Carolina, moved to Pennsylvania during high school where I also completed my undergraduate and graduate studies.

Education & Experience

I first learned about the profession of genetic counseling during a microbiology class at Penn State. I then researched this as a career for me given my loves of molecular biology and talking with and helping people. Genetic counseling is the perfect blend of using my science education/training and passion for helping families in any way I can. I received my bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Penn State in 1999, and my Master of Science in genetic counseling from University of Pittsburgh in 2001. I am a current member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), and am certified through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC). I joined Kaiser Permanente in June 2016, moving my family from Atlanta to Southern California.

About My Practice

I currently see families for prenatal genetic counseling and cancer risk assessment at Kaiser Permanente San Diego. I enjoy meeting individuals from all walks of life, with different life experiences, and finding out how I may best help them in my role as their genetic counselor. I am most proud of being a Kaiser Permanente genetic counselor because of our approach of seeing the individual as a whole with many different health care and wellness needs. I enjoy being in an atmosphere of work/life balance, with an emphasis on preventative health and wellbeing.

How I Thrive

I enjoy spending time in the beautiful California sunshine with my husband and two children.
