Our Genetic Counselors
Roberta Keung, MS, LCGC
My Background
I was born and raised in Southern California.
Education & Experience
I discovered an interest in genetics after taking a course in this subject while doing my undergraduate studies at UC Riverside where I majored in biology. Learning about the field of genetic counseling allowed me to combine my interest in genetics with my desire to work and help others. I completed my graduate studies at UCLA in 1985 where I received my master’s degree in public health, specifically in genetic counseling.
My first job out of graduate school was at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, a teaching hospital where I worked for 8 years, participating in the prenatal clinic, pediatric genetics clinic, and craniofacial clinic. I worked briefly in the private sector, but jumped at the opportunity to work at Kaiser Permanente as a regional coordinator in Pasadena for the California Prenatal Screening Program in 1994. I’ve been with Kaiser Permanente ever since! When a position became available that allowed me to get back into clinical work and also work closer to home, I transitioned to Kaiser Permanente in Orange County where there is a wonderful team of genetic counselors and a top notch medical geneticist.
I am board certified in genetic counseling and licensed in genetic counseling through the State of California. I am a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and the American Society of Human Genetics.
About My Practice
I see a variety of patients, primarily prenatal patients, but also some cancer patients. It is not only very rewarding being able to take a family history, assess risk and provide education, but also to help patients navigate through information that can be overwhelming and support them through decisions.
The experience of working in the private sector has allowed me to really appreciate all that Kaiser Permanente has to offer in patient care. Medical records are easily available because of Health Connect (the electronic medical record system). Care between the different specialties is easily coordinated because we are all under one institution. We practice evidence-based medicine and we have an outstanding department that strives for excellence in all that we do as we advocate for the best patient care.
How I Thrive
I love spending time and doing outdoor activities with my husband and two kids. I also enjoy gardening, playing with our dogs, hiking and camping. I not only like to cook, do foodie things with family and friends and travel, but I also enjoy a relaxing evening at home. I’m a healthy eater and have been pretty successful in meeting my goal of running/exercising 4 times a week.
