I was born and raised in the Central Valley of California where I learned to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, mountains, fishing and backpacking. I moved to Southern California to become one of the first genetic counselors in Southern California and have been here ever since.

My Background
Education & Experience
I received my master’s degree in genetic counseling from Sarah Lawrence College and have been active locally and nationally promoting the profession of genetic counseling. I have been on the board of directors for both the National Society of Genetic Counselors and the American Board of Genetic Counseling. In Southern California, I organized the Southern California Genetic Counselors Group that met quarterly for several years. This group offered support its members and worked to expand genetic counseling in Southern California in a systematic way.
Over the course of my career, I have done various jobs within the genetics community and have had some influence on the shape and development of genetic counseling. I helped grow and develop the genetic service at LAC+USC including the pediatric clinic, a Down syndrome clinic, metabolic service, and prenatal diagnosis program. I was also on the USC School of Medicine faculty and participated in the genetic education of the medical students. From there, I was recruited to lead the Genetic Counseling and Prenatal Diagnosis program at Cedars–Sinai Medical Center. Over my years at CSMC, I was involved in growing and developing the Genetics Department, including the prenatal diagnosis program, pediatric genetics, cancer genetics, and several sub-specialty clinics, including Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, Skeletal Dysplasia Clinic, Metabolic Clinic, and the Neurofibromatosis Clinic. Then I was lead to the industry side of genetic services and was the Regional Genetic Coordinator for Genzyme Genetics. At the conclusion of that company, I was delighted and fortunate to be hired as the manager for the Regional Metabolic Center at Kaiser Permanente.
About My Practice
I am assisting the Metabolic Center evolve into one of the largest Metabolic Centers on the west coast serving Kaiser Permanente members from Kern to San Diego counties. We currently follow patients of all ages with metabolic disorders from inborn errors of metabolism, lysosomal disorders, to disorders of energy metabolism. We assist in their continuity of care and as they grow and develop with their conditions. In addition, I assist with the growth and development of the genetic specialty clinics of neurogenetics and renal genetics.
I have approached my profession with a passion for the patients as their advocate. The development of the profession of genetic counseling and the genetics community in Southern California is all for the care of patients and families with genetic disorders. I will continue to push for the best care possible for the Kaiser Permanente members as I do my daily tasks.
How I Thrive
I have a great family consisting of a wife, six children and now several grandchildren. My time away from work is mostly family time and I also enjoy gardening and working on cars.
