Visiting Patients in the Hospital — See COVID-19 Restrictions above
Visitors are welcome and encouraged at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center. Family and friends play a key role in helping our loved ones recover during and after their stay in the hospital.
Visitors include any person of the patient's choosing (if the patient has decision-making capacity) regardless of sex, economic status, educational background, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, sexual identity, gender identity, or marital status.
- Each patient room is designed to provide comfort for your family and visitors, including a bed for overnight stays.
- Visiting guidelines vary depending on the patient’s reason for hospitalization and are at the discretion of the medical team. If you have concerns regarding these guidelines, please discuss them with your nurse.
- Patients often have compromised immune systems; anyone who is experiencing a cough, cold, or other symptoms of illness should not visit.
- To prevent the spread of illness, visitors should wash their hands when entering and leaving a patient’s room.
- Under certain circumstances, physicians or staff may ask visitors to leave the room while examining a patient or performing a procedure.
- Some people have latex allergies; for that reason, latex balloons are not allowed in the hospital.
- Visitors under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. This is for the health and safety of both patients and children.
Spiritual Care Services
Our clinically trained health care chaplains serve as a member of your health care team, providing compassionate and caring spiritual support to patients, family, and friends while respecting your beliefs, culture, traditions, and values. If requested, a chaplain can also help connect you with clergy or religious leaders in your faith tradition.
The chaplains are here to support you when you:
- Need a compassionate presence and someone to listen
- Seek emotional and spiritual support in times of pain, suffering, loss, or stress
- Are facing a serious illness or difficult health care decision
- Want prayer, ritual, or blessing
- Are considering an ethical or moral dilemma
- Are grieving the loss of a loved one
To Reach a Chaplain
If you have questions or want a chaplain to visit you while you are in the hospital, please ask your nurse to request spiritual care for you. You can also dial extension 2191. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, but the chaplain is often also available after hours.
Healing Spaces
Both the Healing Garden (North Hospital, 1st floor) and the Meditation Room (South Hospital, 2nd floor) are places to reflect, meditate, or pray. The Meditation Room contains sacred writings from several traditions. Volunteers also provide healing music throughout the medical center.
