Thyroid disease
There are two main types of thyroid disease:
- Hyperthyroidism (your body makes too much thyroid hormone)
- Hypothyroidism (your body makes too little thyroid hormone)
It’s important to have your thyroid disease under good control before you try to get pregnant. Untreated or uncontrolled thyroid disease may increase your risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, preeclampsia, or other serious complications for you and your baby.
- Talk with the doctor who manages your thyroid disease before you get pregnant to get the right treatment or medication
- Take your medications faithfully
- Have your thyroid levels checked often during pregnancy
