Your pregnancy team
- When you’re pregnant, you’re part of a team that includes you, your baby, and your health care team. The primary members of your team may include:
- Your Obstetrician is a medical doctor who specializes in pregnancy care. You might also see a Perinatologist if you are having a high-risk pregnancy.
- Certified nurse-midwives are nurses with additional training in pregnancy. They can take care of you before, during, and after pregnancy and childbirth.
- Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who are specially qualified to practice obstetrical care.
- OB nurses are nurses who will help you in the hospital during labor and childbirth.
- Clinic assistants will help you get ready for your check ups in the office with your provider. They may check your weight, height and vital signs; take a brief health history; and assist with medical procedures.
- A 24-hour advice nurse is available by phone (get the advice telephone number for a location near you), or you can email your doctor with questions or concerns.
- A pediatrician will care for your baby after he or she is born and throughout childhood and adolescence.
- A genetic counselor will help you and your partner identify the risk of passing a genetic disease or disorder to your baby.
Every member of your team uses our electronic medical record system to track all your health information, whether you are seen in the clinic or the hospital.
If you are worried about violence at home, please tell a member of your team right away. We’re trained to help.
