Q: I know I’m not supposed to drink alcohol or smoke while I’m pregnant. Are there other things I should avoid too?
A: You’re right to not drink or smoke. And it’s also important to steer clear of caffeine, hot tubs and saunas, fish that contain mercury, and many medications. If you’re not sure whether something is safe for you to have or do, check with your physician.
Q: I’m nervous about pain when I’m giving birth. What are my options?
A: There are a lot of options for managing pain during labor — from epidurals and local anesthesia to hypnosis and acupuncture. Your physician can discuss them with you and help you figure out what will work best for you.
Q: What are the benefits to breastfeeding?
A: Breastfeeding is good for both you and your baby. It gives your baby a complete source of nutrition that’s easy to digest. It may even help your body recover from pregnancy and labor. Plus, breastfeeding can promote a strong bond between you and your child.
