Summer vacation is in full swing, so it’s a great time to get your child’s back-to-school physical exam out of the way. With camp, sports, and vacations to plan around, appointments for kids can fill up fast — especially near the end of the summer. You’ll find more open appointment slots in July, so take advantage now for your peace of mind later.

Children need a physical exam every year

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children 3 to 21 years old have physical exams every year. Children’s bodies grow and change so quickly that subtle symptoms can be easy to miss. Getting your kids checked out yearly means that some potential health problems can be identified before they turn serious.

What you can expect at your child’s exam

A pediatric physical exam will typically include:

  • A vision test
  • A hearing test
  • A scoliosis screening
  • Any needed immunizations
  • Height and weight measurements to help monitor your child’s growth

This is a good time to update your family medical history with your provider. Your doctor might want to offer guidance (such as safety tips, advice on nutrition and exercise, plus facts on pregnancy and STD prevention). Older kids may get screened for depression or STDs.

How to prepare for your child’s physical exam

  • Collect any forms that you’ll need your provider to complete (these can include sports forms, school applications, and college paperwork).
  • If your child received health care services (like screenings or immunizations) outside of Kaiser Permanente, bring those records with you.
  • Make a list of any questions you have and bring them with you. If your child is older, encourage them to make their own list of questions.

The benefits of an early visit

Your child’s back-to-school physical exam gives you a great opportunity to check in on your child’s health. Taking care of it sooner rather than later will not only give you peace of mind as the summer ends, but more room to take care of other back-to-school needs.
