Perioperative Medicine Center
The Perioperative Medicine Center (POM) is a subsidiary of the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care that is responsible for the evaluation and preparation of all surgical patients and those who will receive anesthesia for a procedure. Once your surgery or procedure date has been scheduled, your surgeon’s office should assist you in making an appointment in the POM, usually about a week before your surgery or procedure. Most POM appointments are PHONE appointments, but if you have complex medical problems or are having major surgery, you may be scheduled for a formal office visit in the POM.
Whether your POM appointment is by phone or in person, you will review your medical, surgical, and social history and current medications with a Nurse Practitioner who will update your medical record. Any necessary laboratory or EKG tests will be ordered.
During a POM Phone appointment, a Nurse Practitioner will call you at the designated time and phone number that you provide when the appointment is scheduled. You should be prepared to discuss your medical and surgical history as well as your current medications. If you have any concerns about your current health or readiness for surgery, you should discuss them during this call.
During a POM office visit, you may have your blood drawn or have an EKG performed. If any questions or concerns arise, they will be discussed with your surgeon or anesthesiologist. You will also meet with a registered nurse (RN) to review instructions for how to prepare for your surgery. We will give you a written copy of these instructions to take home with you as well.
