Community Benefit Plan
Kaiser Permanente is dedicated to improving the health of people living and working in the San Gabriel Valley. Beyond strengthening the health care safety net through the provision of emergency medical care, Medi-Cal services, and Kaiser Permanente’s charitable care and coverage programs, we provide qualified nonprofit organizations with grant funding to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
To identify and address the unique needs of our service area, we conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years. The CHNA process informs our community benefit strategy and investments to help improve the total health of our community. To access our CHNA, click here.
Grant requests are considered from nonprofit organizations, schools, and municipalities that provide services and programs in the San Gabriel Valley. All grant requests must respond to local community needs based on the identified priority areas outlined in the Community Benefit Plan. Grants are provided on a calendar year basis and are reviewed by a Grants Review Committee.
For 2017-2019, our funding priorities are:
Access to Health Care
- Increase coverage and access to comprehensive, quality health care services for low income and uninsured populations.
- Enhance individuals’ utilization of the community based health delivery system.
- Improve the capacity of healthcare systems to provide high quality healthcare services, including the social and non-medical needs of their patients.
Economic Security
- Prevent displacement and homelessness.
- Improve educational attainment and employment opportunities for individuals to gain better access to health care.
- Reduce food insecurity in the community.
Mental and Behavioral Health
- Improve the knowledge, capacity and infrastructure of health care, organizations and communities to address mental and behavioral health.
- Promote positive mental health by fostering community cohesion and social and emotional support.
Obesity/Overweight and/or Diabetes (including Healthy Eating Active Living)
- Improve access to opportunities for physical activity and healthy foods in the community.
- Improve linkages between health care services and community-level services.

Other Regional Community Benefit Resources
- Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Programs (ETP) uses live theatre, music, comedy and drama to inspire children and teens to make better decisions about their health and help build stronger communities. ETP’s interactive performances capture student’s attention while creating an emotional connection that makes the show’s health issues real to them. The programs are performed and led by young, professional actor-educators who reflect the cultural diversity of the communities we serve.
