Get fresh this spring in the Mid-Atlantic States
If you’ve never been to a farmers market or haven’t visited one lately, you’re in for a treat. Gone are the days when the simple, roadside stand was the norm.
Today, many farmers markets offer a surprising selection. In addition to seasonal fruits and vegetables, you can often find eggs, specialty cheeses, cider, freshly baked pies, homemade jams, and more.
Finding your local farmers market
If you’re new to your area, or to farmers markets in general, a basic Web search is the easiest way to find the locations nearest you. Market websites will also tell you what you can expect to find when you visit.
The FRESHFARM Markets website has detailed information on more than 150 Chesapeake Bay-area markets. The site also includes recipes, seasonal buying guides, and a calendar of special events.
This Washington Post Web page features an interactive map, locations, hours of operation, and phone numbers for over 200 markets.
What’s in season?
Spring is the perfect time to find delicious fruits and vegetables at your local farmers market. Look for fresh maple sugar and syrup, asparagus, spinach, artichokes, and strawberries coming to market in the next month.
Certain Kaiser Permanente medical centers also host farmers markets. Check with your local facility for more information.
