Simple strategies to live well with diabetes

More than 30 million Americans have diabetes — about 1 in 10 — and most have type 2 diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you have type 2 diabetes, there’s too much sugar in your blood, which can cause serious problems for your feet, eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart.

 

You’re more at risk for developing this disease if you’re over 45 — yet more and more children and young adults are also developing it. So, what can you do to manage your diabetes or even help prevent it?

 

Manage your health with diet and exercise

 

Unlike many health conditions, you can take steps to control your diabetes. Look for ways to build activity into your day, like a walk with a co-worker or a weekend hike. Reach for healthy snacks instead of processed foods. Making these lifestyle changes not only can help you feel better but can also help you take charge of your diabetes. And you can also turn to your health care team for additional support.
