Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points to stimulate healing. Acupuncture is one component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and it is used as one component of a treatment program for chronic pain. It may also be of help for nausea or vomiting, especially when associated with chemotherapy.
A clear diagnosis needs to be established before treatment, therefore a referral is required. Acupuncture alone is less likely to be effective in relieving severe pain, therefore it is used along with other self-care programs such as physical therapy, exercise, pain management, acupressure, etc.
Acupressure is an ancient healing method that uses pressure on acupuncture points to achieve results similar to acupuncture without the use of needles. When we are unsure if acupuncture is safe, we do not recommend it. Examples are patients who are pregnant and patients who might have excessive bleeding due to disease or medications.
