Education resources
For patients and family members
Knowing about conditions and treatment is key to helping with the patient’s recovery. We offer a variety of educational resources to meet the patient’s health care needs and your learning styles.
Our group classes include:
Stroke orientation program
This weekly program, presented by nursing staff, is provided for newly admitted stroke patients and their families. It includes general information about stroke and recovery, and gives patients and their family members an opportunity to ask questions and receive information about programs and services.
Spinal cord injury classes
This nine-class series, open to patients and family members, covers:
- spinal cord basics
- autonomic dysreflexia
- bladder care
- bowel care
- medications and pain
- skin care
- sexual function, fertility, and reproduction
- respiratory complications
- nutrition
We’ve created an online exercise video specifically for those with spinal cord injuries. Presented by an adaptive sports consultant, this video focuses on both aerobic and resistance/weight training exercises. By following the exercises detailed in the video, patients get the workout they need to help keep their bodies strong and healthy, along with tips for exercising safely. Watch the video now.
In addition to giving caregivers training at every opportunity during the patient’s stay, we also schedule at least one caregiver training day before the patient’s discharge from the Center.
Caregivers will be asked about their availability for training soon after the patient’s arrival so they can make the necessary arrangements. Even though we encourage caregivers to ask questions anytime, caregiver training days are great opportunities to get information and learn important skills for safe patient care.
We encourage family members and caregivers to accompany the patient to therapies, and to learn about medicines and care from the physicians, nurses, and therapists. This will help prepare for the caregiver training day.
At our Assistive Technology Center, patients and family members will find a wide range of information and resources:
- lending library
- Internet access
- vision software
- health videos and CDs
- caregiver information
- information on community resources and support groups
The Assistive Technology Center also provides training and special technologies for people who may have difficulty using a standard computer. This training is especially valuable for patients with:
- low vision or blindness
- hearing impairment
- challenges with learning, memory, language, or concentration
- difficulties using a standard keyboard or mouse
Patients can learn to use voice activation programs, screen readers, special keyboards, and more.
When a patient is undergoing rehabilitation care, it can be difficult to make sure family members and friends are informed about the patient’s progress.
To make this easier, we’re happy to tell you about Caring Bridge. It provides free, personalized Web sites you can use to connect with loved ones during a patient’s treatment and recovery, and keep friends and family up-to-date.
