Caregiving for an Older Adult

Family caregivers of older adults with frailty and/or chronic health problems can face myriad challenges.  Risks to health and well-being are statistically higher for family caregivers than for their peers who are not caring for a family member. Studies show that caregivers who are well-informed and well-supported report better health and well-being than those who are not. This 90-minute class explores the many sources of caregiver stress and offers insight about strategies for coping and accessing support, both within the Kaiser Permanente system and in the community.

Sudden Confusion During A Medical Illness

The sudden onset of symptoms of confusion and/or significant changes in behavior, especially in older adults, can signal a potential medical problem called delirium. These symptoms are often misinterpreted as the onset of dementia or progression of a preexisting dementia. Delirium is a treatable condition that is caused by an underlying medical issue, such as infection or chemical imbalance. Recognizing and treating delirium as soon as possible is vital toward avoiding complications and getting the patient back to baseline.  This one-hour class offers information about the warning signs of delirium and how to access necessary evaluation and treatment.
