Chemical dependency is a chronic medical disease, affecting many aspects of an individual’s life as well as his or her family and workplace. Kaiser Permanente’s Chemical Dependency Service is designed to help the individual lead a chemical-free life and to assist family members in their own recovery.

Chemical Dependency Services are comprehensive and integrated, and are available as a basic benefit to all health plan members who have problems with alcohol or illegal drugs, including prescription drugs. Our services are staffed by a multidisciplinary team including clinical social workers, physicians, and psychologists.

The first step in seeking help for alcohol or drug problems is an evaluation by a clinical social worker or psychologist to determine the severity of alcohol or drug problems and to develop an appropriate treatment plan. If medical detoxification is needed, and outpatient evaluation by a physician will be arranged.

Services Provided

Day Treatment is our most intensive outpatient program. This is offered on a sub-regional basis at Vallejo or San Francisco. Day Treatment is a two week intensive program, which the patient attends seven days per week for up to 8 hours a day. In Day Treatment, patients participate in ongoing, comprehensive educational and process groups, homework exercises, and individual counseling. Patients are expected to become involved with community self help groups. This is usually followed up by participating in an outpatient Intensive Recovery Program at Santa Rosa Chemical Dependency Service.

Intensive Recovery Program is an 8 week evening outpatient program that meets five days a week. This program is made up of process groups and education groups. Patients are expected to become involved with community self help groups. Patients receive the support of a case manager throughout their participation in the Intensive Recovery Program.

Long-Term Continuing Treatment: Upon completion of the Intensive Recovery Program, patients have the option to participate in a Long-Term Recovery Group, meeting once per week for up to 16 months, to support ongoing recovery.

Family and Codependency Programs typically start with a 6 week education program after an initial consultation with a clinical social worker or psychologist. Patients may continue in treatment in longer-term codependency process groups.

Adolescent Treatment Program is a multilevel program designed to help adolescents and their parents evaluate the extent of their problems with alcohol and drugs, to decide what steps they are willing to take to address these problems, and to provide more intensive treatment. The program includes adolescent groups, parent groups, multifamily groups, and individual and family therapy.

Transitional Residential Recovery Service is a non-medical, social model residential recovery program. These programs are typically only used after a trial of Day Treatment. This service is provided by contract in licensed recovery homes. Treatment in a Transitional Residential Recovery home is only by referral and must be approved by the Medical Director or Program Director of our Day Treatment Programs in Vallejo or San Francisco utilizing specified admission criteria.
