Laser Vision

We have the most recently FDA approved excimer laser from Germany, the Allegretto Wavelight Laser, one of the world’s most accurate lasers and greatly reduces problems with night time glare. We also have Wavescan and Pupil Registration on the VISX laser. We suggest the Intralase laser for making the corneal flap. We have been using this wonderful laser for the last few years and have found it to be extremely safe. Using the Intralase avoids the risk of button holes in the flap – a rare complication that can happen with the mechanical keratome.

PRK & LASIK

After PRK surgery you will go home with a bandage contact lens in your eye. Keep cold compresses on your eye and take Tylenol every four hours. You may need to take Vicodin to relive the pain. You have been given anesthetic drops and may use them to relieve pain. After LASIK surgery you will be instructed to wear an eye shield at night for one week. This is to prevent you from rubbing your eye after the procedure. Take Tylenol every four hours for any pain.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR EVALUATION

At your evaluation we will carefully measure your prescription, corneal map, corneal thickness, tear production, ocular health, and dilate your eyes. You may decide you want to have a driver with you to take you home when your eyes are dilated. The doctor will also discuss the surgery with you in detail, and answer any questions you have. The appointment often takes 2 hours to complete.

We will use a computerized map of your cornea to make sure you are a good candidate for surgery. If you wear gas permeable or rigid lenses, you may have to wait some time before you can have surgery. It might take as long as one month per decade of wear for the cornea to get back to its normal shape. That means that if you have worn rigid lenses for 30 years, it might take 3 months or longer for your cornea to stabilize. You can wear soft lenses or glasses during this period of adjustment. It is critically important to the success of your surgery that you allow your cornea to resume its normal shape before we do surgery. If you wear soft lenses, leave them out for two weeks prior to the appointment, soft toric lenses need to be out for three weeks prior to the appointment.
