Perioperative Medicine (POM) and Preop Nurse Educator appointments are usually scheduled by surgery schedulers when patients are given their surgery date.  We created this page so that you can get the most from these appointments, and to provide you with information that will make your path to surgery as simple and easy as possible.

Perioperative Medicine (POM) Appointments

The Perioperative Medicine (POM) Clinic is a division of the Department of Anesthesiology that is staffed by physicians specializing in hospital based medicine and physician assistants (PAs) who have been given special training in evaluating and preparing patients for surgery. These clinicians work closely with the Department of Anesthesiology to evaluate and prepare patients for surgery. POM appointments are either telephone appointments with a PA or a clinic visit with a physician.  Your surgeon selects the type of appointment based on the complexity of the surgical procedure and your medical history.  As part of your evaluation you may expect that your POM provider will:

• Review your medical history and medications
• Review pertinent medical tests
• Order any additional medical tests  necessary to make sure it is safe to proceed with surgery
• Communicate any concerns that may arise to your anesthesiologist and/or surgeon, as appropriate

Preoperative Nurse Educator

In addition to POM appointment, you may have been scheduled an appointment with a Preoperative Nurse Educator.  The nurse will perform an assessment and an individualized nursing plan of care will be designed for you.  The nurse will also provide you with information to help you prepare for your surgery, such as information regarding pain management and pneumonia prevention.

Preparing for your surgery

Step 1 – Preparing for your POM Appointment

  • Have a complete list of your medications, including over-the-counter medications, available for your appointment.
  • Make sure you tell your POM provider if you or a family member have experienced any problems with anesthesia.

Step 2 – Your Anesthesia Care

On the day of surgery an anesthesiologist will review your medical history, including the electronic records from your POM appointment, and perform any necessary physical examination relevant to the anesthesia.  The type of anesthetic that is judged best for you will be discussed, including benefits, risks, and alternative techniques when appropriate.  The anesthesiologist will answer your questions and address concerns about anesthesia.  Appropriate preoperative medication, such as sedatives and anti-nausea medications, will be prescribed for nurses to administer prior to your surgery.

Before, during, and after your operation, you will receive comprehensive anesthetic care to assure your utmost safety and comfort throughout the surgical experience.  The Department of Anesthesiology utilizes an Anesthesia Care Team approach, which includes Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) working closely in a collaborative fashion under the medical direction of the anesthesiologist.  State-of-the art medical technology will be used to minimize pain and anxiety, and maintain all of your vital functions in a smooth and stable fashion.
