Preparing for your appointment

We believe in order to receive the best health care, it is important to find a primary care physician with whom you can establish a long-term relationships and develop trust. KP encourages you to see your primary care physician whenever possible for routine issues.

Our Physicians look forward to maximizing their time with you to address your health concerns. Therefore, we offer these tips for a successful office visit.

  • Arrive a few minutes early. Bring your Kaiser Permanente ID card and a photo ID.
  • Check in. There are two ways to check in for appointments–at the receptionist desk, or at our self-service kiosk.
  • Bring a list of all the medications you’re currently taking, including over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • Speak up when you have questions or concerns. If you have questions, make a list and bring the list to your appointment.
  • Be patient with questions from your health care team. Different members of your health care team may ask you the same questions several times, such as what is your name or do you have allergies. Asking these questions is one way to make sure that you are getting the right care.
  • If your plan includes a cost share, it is due for payment when you check in. For your convenience, we accept payment by cash, check, American Express, Discover Card, Visa, MasterCard, or debit card (with the Visa or MasterCard logo) at the reception desk.

Preparing for your surgery

We want your surgery to go smoothly and safely

  • Preparing for your anesthesia and surgery
To help you prepare for your upcoming surgery, please read this document for important information and guidelines to follow in the weeks, days and hours leading up to your surgery. Topics include medication instructions, important paperwork, the wait experience for family and friends, and returning home. (Este documento está disponible en español aquí.)
  • Pre-op videos
Your surgical team strongly recommends that you view a video presentation at least two weeks before your procedure. The video will help you understand what to expect before and after your operation, including how to enhance your healing process. The video is available at the West Los Angeles Medical Center campus, in our On-the-spot Health Education center. Click here for office hours. In addition, your surgeon may ask you to view an educational, procedure-specific Emmi video, depending on your surgery. Focusing on specific surgical procedures, the educational Emmi videos help patients feel more in control of their medical care by presenting complex medical information in a manner that is easy to understand.
  • Medication list
Your surgical team strongly recommends that you discontinue the use of certain medications because they may have a harmful effect during your procedure. Please take a moment to review this list of medications and follow the instructions provided. Please contact your physician if you have any questions.
  • Blood donor center locations
Many surgeries do not require blood transfusions. However, if you need blood, you have many options. Please talk to your doctor to decide which is the best option for you. For a list of blood donor centers, click here.
  • Directions to our medical center
Please use this guide for directions to the West Los Angeles Medical center campus.
